Robert McAlpin was born in 1817 to Henry and Elizabeth McAlpin in Tennessee. Before moving to Oregon, Robert married Jane Thomas in 1837. Robert and Jane McAlpin and family left Missouri and arrived in Oregon in 1851. They bought land near Salem in 1856 and farmed there until 1872 after which they moved to Salem.
